Williams Bay had a huge night for their varsity baseball and softball teams on Friday, May 8, with the girls winning 11-1 against Parkview and the boys winning 27-18 against Deerfield.
Baseball
Sophomore Brock Dobbertin started on the mound for the Bulldogs, pitching 3 of the 7 innings and 10 earned runs.
Sophomore Alexander Fulmer pitched for 3 more innings, where 8 runs were scored but only 3 earned against Fulmer.
Fellow Sophomore Bennett Ades closed out the game, pitching one inning and facing the final three batters.
The first inning ended 4-0 in favor of the Bulldogs, but it was a hard fought battle every inning afterwards.
Bulldogs trailed by 7 runs at the middle of the 5th and answered with 12 of their own runs.
With the score going into the 7th inning 27-18, Deerfield was unable to comeback.
Four Bulldogs achieved 4 runs in the game, Bennett Ades, Freshman Ethan Mulhall, Junior Ethan Weigel, and Senior Evan Welsh.
Softball
Senior Sarena Brown started on the mound for the Bulldogs before switching at the 5th inning with fellow senior Kalie Stanek, who was playing centerfield.
The only run scored by Parkview was in the 4th inning.
Junior Maisie Smith had several key hits that kept the Bulldogs scoring in the game.
Head coach Marty Count mentioned that the team was out a few key starters but several freshmen stepped up who have worked hard and got the job done. "Yesterday, we beat Catholic Central," Coach Count said about the playoff run. "We run-ruled them in 5 innings, 17-1, and they are in our seeding conference, so that'll help us move up. We're really pushing to get a home game right now for the playoffs."
The Bulldogs will be moving into playoff games in the upcoming weeks.
Guthrie to host Wordle game show
USA TODAY
Savannah Guthrie will soon help with your Wordle streak.
The "Today" host, 54, is already a part of many people's morning routines with her long-running career on NBC's flagship morning show. Now she's getting into the game show space.
The network announced May 11 that Guthrie will host a new game show based on "Wordle," the word game from The New York Times Games.
According to a news release, Guthrie is "an avid Wordle player," so seemingly primed for the new gig. The game show will challenge players to "solve five-letter word puzzles in a supersized battle of smarts, speed and fun."
Produced by "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon, the series will have its contestants in "squad" teams who will battle "head-tohead in the Wordle arena" for a cash prize. Casting for the show is currently open.
Fallon and Guthrie announced the new show on "Today" May 11. Guthrie told the audience that the filming for a pilot of the show was meant to happen in March, but was delayed by the disappearance of her mother, Nancy, in February.
"When everything happened with me and my family, they just stopped everything and said we'll wait for you," Guthrie said, thanking Fallon and the producers involved.
"We can't do this show without Savannah Guthrie," Fallon said.
The "Wordle" series isn't due until 2027, but NBC had a slew of other announcements as it presented its upcoming content to advertisers in New York at the annual Upfronts presentations.
In addition to four new scripted series, NBC is also bringing "The Traitors" to prime time with a non-celebrity cast, hosting the 2026 Emmy Awards, the 100th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and bringing a special celebrating the network's 100-year anniversary in December.
Fans will also see many of their favorites return to the network this fall, including the popular "One Chicago" shows on Wednesdays, "Chicago Med" (8 p.m. ET/ PT), "Chicago Fire" (9 p.m. ET/PT) and "Chicago P.D." (10 p.m. ET/PT). "Law & Order: SVU" will be back for its 28th season and "Law and Order" for its 26th. NBC has not decided whether to bring crime drama "The Hunting Party" back for another season.
Comedies "St. Denis Medical," "Happy's Place" and "The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins" will all be back for new go-rounds. Reality competition "The Voice" will be back with coach Kelly Clarkson for Season 30.
