Walworth County to offer Walk With Ease program
The Walworth County Aging and Disability Resource Center is offering Walk With Ease starting May 22 at Matheson Memorial Library, 101 N. Wisconsin St. in Elkhorn.
Walk With Ease—a program from the Arthritis Foundation—is a structured walking program that teaches participants how to safely make physical activity part of their everyday lives.
The program is designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain and is also ideal for people without arthritis who want to make walking a daily habit.
Walk With Ease offers support, information, and tools to help participants develop successful exercise routines.
The six-week group series is led by certified instructor Chetney Blaszczyk RDN, CD.
During the program, participants learn proper stretching and pain management techniques; they also build stamina and walking pace. The program can be modified to meet the needs of individual participants so that each person can develop an exercise routine that fits their unique goals.
“Research shows that walking is not only good for joints, but also helps improve the health of the heart, lungs, and bones,” said Blaszczyk in a press release. “Walking can also help with weight management, which can reduce one’s risk for arthritis in the knee, heart disease, and diabetes. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you will most likely have success with Walk With Ease.”
The information and strategies taught in the program are based on research and tested programs in exercise science, behavior change, and arthritis management.
Updated and evaluated by the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and the Institute on Aging of the University of North Carolina, Walk With Ease is shown to increase balance, strength and walking pace, as well as reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis.
The program is also shown to build participant confidence to be physically active and improve overall health.
Walk With Ease will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, May 22 to June 30 at Matheson Memorial Library, 101 N. Wisconsin St. in Elkhorn.
Pre-registration is required. This workshop has a suggested donation of $10. For more information, contact Chetney Blaszczyk at 262-741-3309.

This year, Martin said there’s an exciting new twist to the popular fundraiser.
“This year, because the musical was so popular — so many students participated in it and it was so well attended — we decided to use the ‘Willy Wonka Jr.’ set as our theme and decorations. When the day is over, pieces of the set will be auctioned off.”

Lake Geneva Cub Scouts Build & Install Blue Bird Nesting Boxes in Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy
Lake Geneva Cub Scout Wolf Den Pack 239 recently completed the construction, donation and installation of eight new blue bird nesting boxes, installing them in Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy located in Williams Bay.
Pack 239 has 45 scouts from kindergarten through 5th grade and are sponsored by Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lake Geneva. Meetings are held weekly on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. during the school year.
Kishwauketoe Board member and Wisconsin Master Naturalist Instructor Jim Killian reported that he was first contacted in January by Cub Scout leaders Anthony Tomaso and Mike Holmes about having their young scouts perform a service project for the benefit of Kishwauketoe. After discussing the need for additional and replacement blue bird boxes at Kishwauketoe, and a good quality design utilizing cedar wood, Cub leaders embarked on this project with their scouts and family members.
Killian reported that the Cubs were super excited to help install their new blue bird boxes with the assistance of parents and leaders Tomaso and Holmes. Installation locations were pre-selected by Killian at Kishwauketoe. All blue bird boxes were mounted on metal fence posts utilizing special mounting brackets.
Each support pole has a PVC pipe surrounding the pole to serve as a predator guard in order to restrict rodents and snakes from climbing the pole to enter a bird house. The entry hole for each bird box has an additional wood block to restrict some other bird types from entering the boxes. All bird boxes were built with an easy opening side panel permitting ready access to the inside of the box for periodic inspection and cleaning.

Eric Johnson
The Walworth County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) has announced the upcoming May schedule of Memory Café gatherings across Walworth County and in western Racine County at Burlington.
Memory Café is a social gathering for those who are experiencing early stage dementia, mild memory loss or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and for their families, friends or care partners. Memory Café is a place to have fun, share experiences and stay socially connected.

“Memory Cafés are social opportunities where the stigma of dementia is left at the door and everybody can feel comfortable and not be embarrassed about things like outbursts, wandering or incontinence issues,” said Walworth County ADRC Dementia Care Specialist Jake Sawyers. “All of that is stuff that people really shouldn’t be worried about. The stigma of the disease ... can lead to self-isolation of both the individual and the caregiver. These Memory Cafés are opportunities to get out of the house, get out of those four walls, and participate in a fun activity that is designed for all cognitive levels ... It’s also kind of an informal support group for the caregivers to create social connections with people that are in similar situations...”
Upcoming Memory Café gatherings, held at a variety of host sites, are scheduled as follows:
Walworth County Memory Café, Walworth County Health and Human Services Building, 1910 County Hwy. NN, Elkhorn — first Fridays of the month from 10:30 a.m. to noon (May 5); Lake Geneva Library Memory Café, Lake Geneva Public Library, 918 W. Wisconsin St., Elkhorn — second Wednesdays of the month from 1:30-3 p.m. (May 10); Delavan UCC Memory Café, Town Bank, 820 Geneva St., Delavan (RSVP by calling 262-728-2212), third Mondays of the month from 10-11:30 a.m. (May 15); Lake City Social Memory Café, Lake City Social, 111 Center St., Lake Geneva — third Tuesdays of the month from 3-4:30 p.m. (May 16); Burlington Memory Café, Aurora Wellness Center, 300 McCanna Pkwy., Burlington — third Fridays of the month from 9:30-10:30 a.m. (May 19).
