New season for Big Foot Baseball is just around the corner
Kaitlyn Hupp
Big Foot senior Carter Ries will look to finish off his senior
season on a high note.
Quincy Torrez will be one of many underclassmen returning to the
Big Foot baseball team this season.
Chase Wilson, another sophomore, returns for his second season
on varsity.
Big Foot Baseball is heading into the upcoming season with a young team ready to compete, improve their game and make a strong conference push.
Head Coach Justin Bell said that losing the eight seniors that played last year will be tough and make for a younger team this year, but they are still returning a decent amount of experienced players.
“We are led by our four-year Varsity starter, senior infielder Carter Ries, and have senior pitcher Flynn Montgomery back to throw a lot of big innings for us this season,” Bell said.
Sophomores Quincy Torrez, Chase Wilson, River Jedlicka, and Ryne Huff are returning to varsity play this year after playing good innings last year as freshmen, according to Coach Bell.
“With a mix of returning experience and younger players ready to step into bigger roles we are focused on quality fundamental baseball and building consistency,” Bell said. “I believe this group has every opportunity to continually improve as the season goes on.”
According to Bell, last season they split every series of conference play with each team except for one.
The Chiefs look to come back from the 5-10 record they had last season with the help from younger players moving up from junior varsity and the seniors playing their last season of high school baseball.
The first home game for the Chiefs will be Saturday, March 28, at 10 a.m. against Catholic Central.

Badger's Boys Track and Field brings in a new head coach to lead the team this season, as well as a solid group of underclassmen looking for varsity meets, and upperclassmen that will head the team this season.
Head coach Tyler VanDeVelde joins the coaching staff this year and is an alumni and current teacher at Badger.
"We have a younger team and are going to have to rely on the upperclassmen to lead the way and provide the example of what it looks like to be a Badger athlete as our younger athletes continue in the program," Coach VanDeVelde said.
Several seniors have varsity meets under their belts such as Logan Peters, Ivan MoralesVazquez, Luke Brown, and Andrew Braden, and will be ones to lead the team this year, coach VanDeVelde said.
Senior Eli VanDeBerg will be a key leader for the distance team, according to coach VanDeVelde.
Junior Jackson Kutchenberg has raced on the varsity team since his freshman year, and coach VanDeVelde mentioned that he continues to improve his 400-meter dash.
Coach VanDeVelde said over 70 student athletes are currently on the roster this year with a solid group of 9th, 10th, and 11th graders he thinks will contribute greatly to the team success.
"This should be a great year and there will be some ups and downs, but I have no doubt that our athletes will do the best that they can and will compete in every event," Coach VanDeVelde said.
The team participated in the Racine Case Invitational meet on March 19, the first meet of the season for the Badgers and they placed fifth out of 13 schools that competed.

Badger Boys tennis eyes another state run
Kaitlyn Hupp
Badger sophomore Reid Hirn (26-1) anticipates his return shot in
his sectional championship match Thursday, May 29.
Badger Boys Tennis is looking to make it back to state competition again in the 36th and final season for Head Coach Paul Lauterbach.
Last season was a record for the team according to Lauterbach, with the Badgers claiming their third straight conference championship, a 4th place finish in the State tournament as a team, and several individual State qualifications.
Following the loss of only two seniors, Lauterbach is excited for the return of several top players from last season and a few who were on the edge of being in the team’s top 10 that have a chance to show their skills this year.
The conference and sectional champion doubles team consisted of seniors that will surely be missed this season but gives room for some younger players to shine.
“We’re going to be very confident this year going into the season and we just got to make sure that we are confident without being cocky because a lot of things can happen during the season,” Lauterbach said. “You can get upset, you can get surprised by some teams, you know, somebody can get injured, grades, there are different things. But we do have a very strong lineup coming back.”
Badger freshman Ben Auguston hits a return shot in the number
three doubles championship match at sectionals Thursday, May
29.
The schedule for the Badgers will include several invitationals against programs that Lauterbach acknowledged that with the big run that the they had last season, they now have a target on their backs, but want to prove that they can make another big run this season.
“We are in some big time invitationals this year because everybody wants to play us now,” Lauterbach said. “So, targets are on our back, which is, you know, it’s a privilege. It’s not something we’re going to shy away from. We’re going to embrace it. These guys will work harder than any team I’ve ever had because they’ve earned it.”
The team will have 12-14 players consistently playing for success, as Coach Lauterbach mentions it takes all of them to make big runs like last year’s.
One way the team is preparing for the upcoming season is working on tiebreaker matches, as the way to win or lose games in previous seasons came down to the final match in a best two out of three scenarios more often than not.
“We practice them from day one because so many matches will come down to how do you do in the close matches,” Coach Lauterbach said. “There are some matches that you’re going to win. There’s some matches that you most likely will lose, but a lot of our matches could go either way.”
Lauterbach said he is coming back to coach not because he has to, but because he wants to, really enjoys coaching this program, and is looking forward to this season with the student athletes, coaching staff, and parents.
“It’s a great program,” Coach Lauterbach said. “I really enjoy it and I want the players, the coaches, and the parents, you know, just let’s have a good season. We’re going to work our butts off, and we’re going to set the bar really high. But I just want to make sure that everybody really enjoys the season as a whole.”

Valley Co-Conference Champions following their 1-0 loss to
Delavan-Darien Thursday, May 29. The Chiefdogs' finished with a
conference record of 8-1-1.

The Big Foot/Williams Bay girls co-op varsity soccer team will head into their ninth season under the direction of Head Coach Rene Perez and several key seniors returning with their home opener against Wilmot Union High School on Thursday, April 2 at 7 p.m.
"We are coming off a great year, having won the Rock Valley Conference Championship and a WIAA Regional Championship," Perez said.
While there were six seniors who graduated last year that Perez said brought a lot of talent and leadership, the team has 13 returning players that will play on the pitch this year.
Senior Mya Gonzalez, a three-time Rock Valley Conference First Team All-Conference player who tallied 35 goals and 22 assists last year, and junior Jacki Rambatt, a two-time Rock Valley Conference First Team All-Conference player, has combined for 46 goals and 16 assists so far in her career, will lead the offensive side of the ball this season.
Supporting the offensive side will be seniors Sophia Stewart, Haylie Wanat, and Ava Hanna as well as juniors Janet Castaneda and Kaylie Patterson.
Leading the team on the defensive side of the ball will be senior Gracie Price and junior Lucia Martinez. w
Perez mentioned that a v strong player to watch will be Kate Cismoski, a senior making her comeback after an ACL injury sidelined her during her sophomore year and expected to make a deep impact on the defensive end of the field.
Several younger players will be taking the field for varsity minutes and coming into key roles, such as sophomores Kacy Duber, Zuliemy Martinez and Meta Akerley.
The coaching staff also expects some players from the junior varsity team, returning bench players, and a select group of talented freshmen to step up and contribute meaningful minutes this season, coach Perez said.
"Our team goal is to win the conference again and make another strong playoff run," Perez said. "We did lose key players on defense, so some of our younger players will need to step up and fill those roles. However, our attack remains strong, with most of our key contributors returning."
