RACINE — Two area artists have watercolor paintings in the Watercolor Wisconsin 2023 exhibit.
An annual affair since its inaugural event in 1966, the exhibit is the result of a statewide competition organized by the Racine Art Museum.
Now in its 57th year, the works that will be on display at the museum's Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts features paintings by Dave Jewell, of Burlington; and Christine B. Miller, of Whitewater.
"The endurance of Watercolor Wisconsin reflects a commitment to a medium that continues to inspire artists and engage audiences," said Lena Vigna, the museum's curator of exhibitions.
Vigna said the exhibit gives people the chance to see what Wisconsin artists can do with a historically marginalized medium.
"The beauty of a show like this is that there are both straightforward approaches and those that push and pull at the possibilities of aqueous-based materials," Vigna said.
Arts from anywhere within Wisconsin could submit twoand three-dimensional works on paper for the competition.
Jurors for the competition considered 233 works by 136 Wisconsin-based artists. Of them, 96 works by 80 artists were selected for the exhibit, which will be on display through April 13, 2024.
There will be a preview reception and awards ceremony for Watercolor Wisconsin 2023 Sunday, Dec. 10, from 2-4 p.m., at Wustum, 2519 Northwestern Ave., Racine.
Bruce W. Pepich, museum executive director and curator of collections, will host the awards presentation at 2:30 p.m.
