Bookstore and library partner for National Poetry Month
FROM STAFF REPORTS
Lakeside Books and Lake Geneva Public Library are partnering in April to celebrate National Poetry Month, bringing a lineup of readings, workshop, and interactive events to the Lake Geneva community.
The series kicked off on April 1 with a full-house author event featuring Sherman Funmaker, who presented his debut collection, "Bear Taracks: Memories of a Ho-Chunk Elder." Many people attended the event to listen to Funmaker talk about his collection.
"Seeing the community come together with such enthusiasm for poetry has been incredible," Alicia Boemi, owner of Lakeside Books, said in a press release. "We're excited to continue building that energy throughout April."
Upcoming events include:
April 16 at 6 p.m. — Author event with J.K. Kennedy, featuring a reading, question and answer session, and book signing for "Clumsy Beauty."
April 18 at 1 p.m. — "Poetry Academy for Earthlings: Youth," for ages 8 years and older — a playful and creative writing workshop designed to encourage imagination.
April 18 at 3 p.m. — "Poetry Academy for Earthlings: Adults," for ages 17 years and older — a companion workshop inviting adults to explore poetic expression.
April 21 at 6 p.m. — "AllAges Poetry Open Mic," for children in fourth grade and older — community members are invited to share their own work or favorite poems. April 24 from 10 a.m. to noon — "Custom Poetry Pop-Up" — Celebrate National Poetry Month with coffee, cookies, vintage typewriters and personalized poems. Library staff poets will create custom haikus on the spot based on attendees' memories, feelings or ideas.
Month-long community initiatives:
Poem Post — Available at both Lakeside Books and the Lake Geneva Public Library, these mailboxes invite community members to submit original poems for display in the bookstore or library.
Window poetry display — Visitors can contribute to a growing community installation by writing poems directly on the library's windows.
Community Poetry Walk, April 16–30, — A curated collection of submitted poems will be displayed along the sidewalk in front of the Lake Geneva Public Library, creating an outdoor literary experience for the public.
All events are taking place at the library and are designed to be welcoming, accessible and inspiring for poets and poetry lovers of all ages and experience levels.
Walworth County food bank conducts campaign for new facility
FROM STAFF REPORTS
Officials from the Bridge Food & Diaper Bank, 205 E.Commerce Court in Elkhorn, have launched a $6 million capital campaign to construct a new facility.
The current facility, a former medical clinic, has reached its capacity, and the space restricts the number of items that may be received, stored and distributed.
The campaign, entitled "Bridge to a Better Tomorrow," will help fund the construction of a new facility designed to increase storage, improve distribution and serve more residents in need.
Plans for the project include an 18,000-squarefoot, single-level building; expanded service hours with a grocery-style layout where clients may choose their own food; increased freezer, cooler, dry storage and food preparation areas; and gathering spaces for education and outreach programs.
The organization already has secured about $2 million in commitments from local donors and foundations.
Food bank officials also have purchased property in central Walworth County, located near the current food bank. A detailed design for the building has been completed by Corporate Contractors, Inc. representatives, and the project has received state approval.
"A community thrives when its residents are financially stable and have enough food to eat," Tammy Dunn, executive director for the Bridge Food & Diaper Bank, said in a press release. "We know we can serve more people in crisis and do it more efficiently. This project will increase our capacity to strengthen individuals and families, support local businesses and provide a strong foundation for our entire community."
The Bridge Food & Diaper Bank, formerly known as the Walworth County Food & Diaper Bank, was founded in 2009 and currently serves more than 2,500 households each year and helps support 19 partner organizations throughout Walworth County with food, diapers, toiletry supplies and incontinence products.
