Badger tennis competed in a match up against defending State Champs Brookfield Central, and while they may have lost overall, Head Coach Paul Lauterbach is excited for what this means in the long run.
The teams were well paired, as Badger placed fourth in a statewide invitational the previous weekend held in Green Bay and made it to State semifinals last year.
Badger ended the meet with 2 wins, both in the doubles category.
"How we do throughout the season, against the best teams, will always be how the tiebreakers go," Coach Lauterbach said. "It will always come down to tie breakers. And that's what we were talking about before the season started."
Seniors Brandon Hall and Johnny Engerman defeated their opponents from Brookfield Central 6-2 and 7-5.
Senior Dallas Chapman and Sophomore Ben Augustson defeated their opponents in a close match up, losing the first round 2-6 and then winning the final two rounds 6-2 and 10-8.
"Our level of play was maybe a B tonight compared to how we've played as a team sometimes throughout the season andI think that we can play stronger," Coach Lauterbach said. "We're only two and a half weeks into the season, of course. So I think it was a good test for us. We can build on that."
Coach Lauterbach mentioned that the team will play a lot of good schools this season and are dealing with some injuries early this season, but after finishing 4th place in the statewide tournament recently, the players that really stepped up to fill in gave the team some good looks for the upcoming matches.
"Five different lineups, five different matches," Coach Lauterbach said. "And whatever role I'm asking somebody to do, they fill it. And I think that's gonna pay dividends for us in the future."
The team had a lot of good things come out of the day, according to Coach Lauterbach, and he looks forward to them playing a little better as a whole team in the upcoming matches.
